- We Can Help Anxious Pets!
We cover the 3 main reasons that pets become anxious, and learn about the signs (both subtle, and not-so-suble) so you can stay safe, and be prepared. Is Your Pet Anxious? The FAS Scale can help with finding out! Familiarizing yourself with the FAS Scale and studying which signs your pet exhibits during stressful situations can not only help prevent general fear and anxiety, but also help you identify when intervention is needed before a snap, bite, or collar escape happens. If your pet struggles with anxiety and fear associated with the vet specifically, we also have some tips that may help! Preparing for a vet visit can be as simple as acclimating your dog to car rides. Train your dog to be comfortable with car rides by giving praise and treats while the car is idle, running, and driving. This will help your pup associate the car with a positive experience. If your dog needs to be in a carrier, keeping the carrier open at home and filling it with treats can help them associate it with positivity as well! Over time, they will start to see it as simply a part of their environment rather than that scary cage that only comes out when it’s time to go to the vet. If your dog only experiences stress when at the vet, ‘happy visits’ may help! Happy visits involve bringing your dog into one of our hospitals outside of regular appointment times to update their weight, get a treat, or just play in an exam room without getting any services done. These types of visits help lower the stakes of vet visits and build a positive association with the hospital over time. Eventually, when your pup does have an appointment in which medical care is required, they have a higher chance of remaining relaxed during their treatment. Some other tips for reducing stress at the vet may be: Bringing your dog’s favorite toy, treats, or other familiar item(s) Letting your pup gently play and get treats throughout their appointment (helps build a positive relationship with our staff) Checking in for your appointment from your car to avoid potential stressful interactions within our lobby Pre-medicating your dog with anti-anxiety medications prior to your visit to help your pup feel more relaxed during stressful situations. WHY ARE PETS ANXIOUS? Anxiety and fear in pets can take many forms. Dogs and cats may become aggressive or nip related to underlying fear, but most often the signs are more subtle. Fear and anxiety can come from new people or new environments, separation, car rides, storms, vet visits, or even subtle changes in their environment that we humans may not notice. SIGNS THAT YOUR PET IS ANXIOUS You may see destructive behaviors in dogs such as tearing up items or urinating/defecating inappropriately. They may tremble, hide, or look out of the side of their eyes, so you see more of the whites of their eyes showing than usual. Some dogs may even jump up more than usual, lick people, and try to get attention. This can appear almost as if they are very happy but with an added anxious energy. In cats, signs can be even more difficult to recognize. Often a sign of stress could be going 'outside the litterbox'. Cats may also hide more, simply change their eating habits, or become more prone to hissing, scratching, or biting. In both dogs and cats, their eating, drinking, or other habits may change. You also may take note of additional shedding during episodes of stress. WHAT CAUSES ANXIETY IN PETS? In both dogs and cats, there can be medical reasons for behavior changes that can resemble fear/anxiety. These conditions range from pain, to underlying hormone diseases. By thoroughly reviewing a history and performing a physical examination, we can often determine the underlying reason for changed behaviors and offer options that can help your pet.

- Advanced Pet Ultrasound Care | Newberry Animal Hospital | Ultrasound
Our non-invasive pet ultrasound services provide a clear look at internal organs. Get accurate diagnostics and expert care to keep your furry friend healthy. Ultrasound This is a great tool to provide our doctors with a non-invasive look inside. One of the most common reasons for a veterinarian to use ultrasound is as an aid to diagnosis. Back Ultrasound is most often used by veterinarians as a non-invasive way to reaffirm a diagnosis that is already being considered through a veterinary examination. For example, if a male cat is brought in by an owner who claims that the cat is having difficulty urinating, the veterinarian might use ultrasound to check for an obstruction in the bladder or urethra. While examining these organs the veterinarian can also look at bladder thickness, and for bladder stones. Ultrasound can also be used to examine suspicious masses and other findings which occur during a manual exam. It can also be used in emergency settings to look for serious medical problems such as internal organs damaged in a collision.

- Expert Pet Allergy Testing & Care | Newberry Animal Hospital | Allergy Testing
Does your pet have itchy skin or allergies? Our expert team offers comprehensive allergy testing and relief strategies to keep your pet healthy and comfortable. Allergy Testing Pet allergies are one of the most common problems discussed at appointment time. Want to know more about how pets show allergic symptoms? Back Can pets have allergies? Allergies are caused by certain common substances in the environment known as “allergens”. These allergens include the pollens of various grasses, weeds, trees, mold spores, house dust, dust mites, and a variety of other substances including foods. What are common pet allergy symptoms? Allergy symptoms can be highly variable. Some of the symptoms associated with allergy include itchy feet, ears, inflammation of the skin, persistent scratching, chewing and face rubbing. Some pets lose hair and may experience rashes that can lead to secondary skin infections. How can I tell if my pet is allergic? Your veterinarian can conduct an examination to determine whether your pet has been affected by an allergen. He/She will ask questions about the pet’s history, environment and symptoms. A simple test can be performed on a small sample of blood submitted to Nelco Vet for analysis. Your pet’s serum will be tested for a variety of inhalants, such as tree, grass and weed pollens, fungi, house dust and mites that are specific to the region in which you live, Foods commonly found in your pet’s diet can also be tested. What is the best course of therapy for my pet? Your veterinarian is best qualified to discuss treatment options once it is determined that your pet is allergic. Avoidance of the allergens is preferred, but may not be practical or possible. Medications, including steroids and antihistamines, may temporarily relieve symptoms but are not recommended for prolonged use. Hyposensitization or immunotherapy is the most natural and safe way to control allergies. What is hyposensitization? Your veterinarian may recommend hyposensitization, also referred to as immunotherapy or ‘allergy shots’. Once the pet’s allergies are identified, a mixture of specifically prescribed allergens is formulated. This ‘allergy extract’ is made up of the offending allergens and is given in small doses that are gradually increased over time. The extract reduces the sensitivity of the pet to those allergens. In this manner, allergic symptoms are controlled without the undesirable effects of corticosteroids and similar drugs. How effective is this form of treatment? Clinical studies have shown that immunotherapy desensitization is highly effective in controlling symptoms of allergy. Success rates up to 60-70% have been reported. When will my pet improve? Pets progress at different rates. Many will show significant improvement in 6 months. But others will take up to one year before improvement is noted. It is critical, therefore, that treatment be continued for at least one year. How long will my pet need allergy injections? Allergies can last throughout the lifetime of your pet. It is important to understand that allergies may never be cured, but they can be controlled. As long as symptoms persist, injections may be necessary. Are there any dangers involved? Adverse reactions to allergenic extracts are extremely rare but may occur during the initial phase of immunotherapy. Usually, a simple adjustment to the dosage schedule is required. Extracts provided through Nelco Vet are USDA Licensed What about food allergies? Since dogs and cats cannot be hypo-sensitized to foods, the best way to manage food allergies is avoidance. Nelco Vet can provide your veterinarian a computerized list of commercially available foods that would be appropriate for your pet. What if my pet goes untreated? The uncomfortable itchy skin that your pet will experience can lead to a secondary skin infection that can cause severe damage to the skin. Your pet may experience rashes and hair loss due to self-trauma brought on by scratching, rubbing, licking and chewing. These symptoms will remain if untreated and will worsen as your pet ages. How can I help the doctor? Your role in the diagnosis and treatment of allergic disorders is essential. Your doctor will need a complete history of your pet’s problems. This will include an environmental analysis of indoor/outdoor inhalant allergens along with an analysis of your pet's diet. It is important to determine what triggers your pet’s sensitivity and how much exposure to allergens. Your personal observation of your pet will help the veterinarian correlate your symptoms with a diagnosis. (Source: Nelco Vet)
